Live coding interviews are scored on more than the final code. Interviewers assess how you think, how you handle pressure, and how you communicate while typing. This 7-step framework, used by candidates who landed FAANG offers via InterviewLift, gives you a repeatable structure that works for every live coding round — CoderPad, HackerRank, CodeSignal, or a shared Google Doc.

The 7-Step Live Coding Framework

Step 1: Clarify the question (2-3 minutes)

Never start typing immediately. Restate the problem in your own words, ask about input constraints (size, type, negative numbers, empty input), and confirm the expected output format. Interviewers score 'clarification quality' as a separate axis — strong candidates ask 3-4 sharp questions before writing code.

Step 2: Walk through 2-3 examples (3 minutes)

Use the interviewer's example, then construct one of your own to surface edge cases — empty array, single element, duplicates, negative numbers, integer overflow. The goal is to build shared understanding before code. Strong candidates often catch problem statement ambiguities here.

Step 3: State the brute-force approach (2 minutes)

Verbally describe the obvious O(n²) or O(n³) approach. Say its time and space complexity. This shows you understand the problem and primes the interviewer for the optimisation discussion. Do not write brute-force code unless asked.

Step 4: Propose an optimised approach (3-5 minutes)

Discuss data structures (hash map for O(1) lookup, monotonic stack for next-greater-element, heap for top-K, two pointers for sorted arrays). State the trade-off — better time at the cost of space, or vice versa. Get interviewer buy-in before writing.

Step 5: Code the solution (15-20 minutes)

Write clean, readable code with descriptive variable names. Talk through what you are typing — interviewers cannot read your mind. Handle edge cases explicitly. Avoid premature optimisation. Aim for code that compiles on the first try; spelling and syntax errors signal sloppiness.

Step 6: Dry-run with test cases (3-5 minutes)

Walk through your code with a test input, tracking variable state line by line. This catches off-by-one errors before the interviewer does. Test with the trivial cases (empty, single element) plus one non-trivial case. Do not run the code until you have dry-run it manually.

Step 7: Discuss optimisations + complexity (3 minutes)

State final time + space complexity precisely. Discuss: how would you handle a 10× larger input? A streaming input? A distributed version? Even if the interviewer doesn't ask, mentioning these shows engineering maturity.

Common Live Coding Mistakes

  • Starting to code in the first 2 minutes — the strongest signal you skipped the clarification step.
  • Using cryptic variable names (i, j, k, x, y) — interviewers score code readability.
  • Falling silent for >30 seconds while coding — verbalise your thinking continuously.
  • Saying 'I think this works' instead of dry-running to prove it works.
  • Ignoring time complexity and only thinking about the algorithm.
  • Optimising prematurely instead of getting a working solution first.
  • Forgetting edge cases like empty input, single element, all duplicates, or negative numbers.

Practice With InterviewLift

InterviewLift's AI Mock Interview includes coding mode that lets you practice this exact framework with a simulated interviewer. The mock interviewer asks clarifying-question prompts, listens to your verbal reasoning, and scores you against the same rubric Google, Meta, and Amazon use. For real-time help during the actual interview, the InterviewLift desktop copilot surfaces the framework in a transparent overlay invisible to your interviewer's screen-share.
