Solo prep — reading Leetcode discussions, watching system-design videos, scrolling Glassdoor — feels productive but is the single biggest reason strong candidates fail interviews. The skills you need (clarifying questions, narrating your thought process, handling silence, recovering from a stumble) are interactive. They cannot be built alone. Here is how to run mock interviews that actually move your score.
The Problem With Solo Prep
- You can solve the problem; the interviewer needs to hear you solve it. Different skill.
- You don't get the stress signal of being watched. Different cortisol response.
- You never have to recover from "that won't work" mid-solution. Different muscle.
- You answer behavioural questions perfectly in the mirror but freeze under live questioning. Different problem.
Make Mocks Useful
Match the Format You're Targeting
If your real loop has 45-minute coding rounds, run 45-minute mocks. If you have a 60-minute system design, run 60-minute mocks. Compressed practice does not transfer — your body needs to learn the time pressure of the actual format.
Use a Live Interviewer or AI With Adversarial Probing
A mock where the interviewer just sits quietly is useless. You need someone (or a calibrated AI) who interrupts, asks 'why', challenges your trade-off, and stays silent at the awkward moments. The mock is good when it feels harder than the real interview.
Record It, Watch It Back
The single highest-leverage practice habit. You will notice things you cannot feel in the moment: how often you say 'um', how long your pauses run, how rarely you confirm understanding before coding. The first viewing is uncomfortable; the fix is immediate.
The Four Feedback Signals That Move Your Score
Don't ask 'how did I do?' Ask: (1) Where did I lose you? (2) Where did I run too long? (3) Where would you have probed deeper? (4) Would you advance me to the next round? Specific feedback against the rubric beats general praise.
How Often
Candidates who run 4+ full-length mocks before a high-stakes loop report 60% lower 'freeze incident' rates than candidates who only practise solo. The ROI of an hour of mock practice in the week before an onsite is higher than 10 hours of Leetcode in the month before it.
InterviewLift's AI mock interview gives you all four feedback signals automatically — per-round scores against the real company rubrics, transcript with highlight reels of weak moments, and adversarial follow-ups calibrated to your level.
