How to Answer "What Are Your Salary Expectations?" Without Lowballing

The salary expectations question is the single biggest leverage point in your job search and almost everyone answers it badly. Lowball, and you cap your offer. Anchor too high without justification, and you sound naive. Refuse to answer, and you frustrate the recruiter and slow the loop. The right answer threads all three needles.

Before You Answer — Do the Homework

Research the Real Band

Use Levels.fyi for FAANG and Glassdoor + Blind + InterviewLift's salary tool for the rest. Get a range for the role, the level, and the city. The number that matters is the 75th percentile — that is your anchor, not the median.

Know Your Floor and Walk-Away

Before any conversation, know two numbers: the lowest base you'd accept (your floor) and the total compensation below which you'd walk (your walk-away). These are private — never share them — but they keep you from caving under pressure.

The Three-Part Answer

Part 1 — Anchor With a Range, Not a Number

Give a range that starts at the 75th percentile and ends ~20% higher. "Based on the role and my background, I am looking at base of X to Y, plus the standard equity and bonus structure." Ranges leave room; single numbers anchor you to themselves.

Part 2 — Justify the Range

Reference the market data briefly. "That aligns with the 75th percentile for this role at comparable companies in this city." Justification turns 'high expectation' into 'informed expectation.'

Part 3 — Stay Open

End with: "That said, I am open if the total package and growth opportunity are strong." This signals you are negotiating in good faith without committing.

"Based on my level and the comp data for senior backend roles in this region, I am looking at $230K-$280K base, plus standard equity and bonus. That aligns with the 75th percentile for this role at comparable companies, but I am open if the total package and growth opportunity are strong."

What Not to Do

Do not name your current salary unless legally required. Do not say 'I need at least X to live here' — your needs are not the employer's problem. Do not say 'I am flexible' alone — flexibility without an anchor is a discount.

InterviewLift's salary negotiation tool builds the three-part answer from real recent offer data for your exact level, role, and city — and runs a practice call where you defend the range under pressure.
