Why Should We Hire You? How to Answer With Confidence

"Why should we hire you?" is the question where interviewers stop being polite and start being honest. They are not asking for a resume recap — they are asking you to make the business case for hiring you over the other strong candidates they have already met. Most people fumble it because they were never taught the difference between a qualification and a value proposition.

The Three-Part Formula

Part 1 — Restate Their Top Need

Open by naming the one or two problems the role is meant to solve. You learnt these from the job description, the recruiter call, and questions earlier in the interview. Restating their need proves you listened and frames the rest of your answer as a direct response.

Part 2 — Map a Specific Result You Have Delivered

Pick one outcome from your career that mirrors what they need. Use real numbers — percentage lift, revenue, latency reduction, churn drop. Specific results are more credible than skill lists.

Part 3 — Close With Why You Want This Specific Role

End with motivation, not capability. Hiring managers know other candidates can do the job; they want to know who will do it with energy. One sentence on why this team or mission excites you is enough.

"You mentioned the team is struggling with checkout-funnel drop-off. At my last company I rewrote our payment flow and cut abandonment from 31% to 19% in a quarter — same problem pattern, same tooling. What drew me here is that you are doing this at five times the scale, and I want to operate at that level next."
"You said the role needs someone who can ship without a lot of supervision. I just spent two years as the second engineer on a sub-team and shipped four releases solo — the latest one is what powers your competitor's most-used feature today. I would rather build that here, where the mission actually matches what I read about every week."

Practise this answer out loud before the interview. Reading it silently is not enough — the rhythm only lands when you hear yourself say it. InterviewLift's mock interview will throw this question at you in a randomised order so you cannot memorise; the rubric scores you on whether you restated the need, used specific numbers, and closed with motivation.
