The recruiter phone screen is the round most candidates underestimate. They prepare for the technical and onsite rounds and treat the screen as a formality — only to be cut in week one. In reality, recruiters are running a strict pre-screen rubric in those 25 minutes, and the rejection rate is 60-70% at competitive companies.
What Recruiters Are Actually Scoring
- Compensation alignment — are you in the band, or will an offer be wasted?
- Motivation — is this role one of fifty applications or a deliberate choice?
- Communication — can you explain your work to a non-technical person?
- Logistics — visa, location, notice period, start date, deal-breakers.
- Story coherence — does your job-to-job trajectory make sense?
Get the Compensation Question Right
When asked your expectation, give a range based on real market data — Levels.fyi, Glassdoor, or InterviewLift's salary tool — and anchor at the 75th percentile. Saying 'I am flexible, what is the band?' is fine if you have not researched, but the strongest move is naming a number and a justification ("Based on my level and the comp surveys for this role in this city, I am looking at X to Y."). Lowballing here costs you the offer ceiling.
Have a Two-Minute Why-This-Role Answer
Be ready to explain why this specific company and role, with one or two reasons that are not 'I want growth' or 'I love the brand.' Reference a recent product launch, an engineering blog post, or a leader's recent talk. Recruiters can hear scripted enthusiasm in five seconds.
Walk Through Your Resume Top-Down in 90 Seconds
Recruiters will ask 'tell me about yourself' or 'walk me through your background.' Have a tight 90-second walkthrough that hits the last two roles, one signature outcome each, and lands on why this role is the right next step. Three minutes is too long; five minutes is fatal.
Save One Smart Question for the End
When they ask if you have questions, do not say 'no, you covered it.' Ask one genuinely curious thing about the role, team, or onboarding. "What does success in this role look like 90 days in?" is a reliable default.
Treat the phone screen as a full interview, not a check-in. Sit at a desk, not in your car. Have your resume open and a glass of water. Mute your notifications. InterviewLift's recruiter-screen mock simulates the full call with the exact rubric most companies use — you'll know within five minutes whether you would have passed.
